Chester County, Pennsylvania is renowned for its diverse geology and rich mineral history, offering an exceptional variety of mineral deposits and classic collecting localities. With more than 200 years of documented mining activity, mineral production in Chester County began before the American Revolutionary War and continues in limited forms today. The county is home to numerous famous and world-class mineral localities, making it a cornerstone of Pennsylvania mineralogy.
“Classic Mineral Localities of Chester County, Pennsylvania” explores the geological history, mining heritage, and mineralogy of several of the region’s most important sites, including the Phoenixville (Wheatley) Mines, French Creek Mine, Poorhouse Quarry, Brinton’s Quarry, Corundum Hill, and Keystone (Cornog) Quarry. These localities are well known for producing historically significant and collectible mineral specimens.
Mineral collecting remains possible at most of these Chester County localities, with the exception of the Keystone Quarry, which is now flooded. This presentation provides valuable insight for mineral collectors, geologists, historians, and rockhounds interested in the classic mineral deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania.
