61st Annual Earth Science Gem and Mineral
- Location: Wilmington, DE
Date: 10/26/2019 12:00 AM
Location: Lang Shaft / High St. site (Franklin, NJ) – Phil Crabb / John Postas property, ,
Attendees were: The Hog, Jeff “the Bald Eagle” Wilson, Steve “Pickles” Wien, and Derek Yoost; hosted by Phil Crabb and John Postas Well, as becomes the case every so often, we must precede this great collecting trip with an asterisk. In an unfortunate turn of events, we had a trip that numerous members were anticipating cancelled. We had a trip planned for Oxford Quarry (Tilcon owned) on this day. As happened several times in the past, we unfortunately were informed that the trip was a no go. New management at Tilcon made the call just over a week before the trip was set to happen. We were left without a trip and a nothing planned for that date. Phil Crabb came to the rescue on this one. He was available for this date and allowed some club members to visit. Ultimately, five members visited and thoroughly enjoyed several hours of digging at the High St. property. Phil informed us of some recent diggings at his property, and some new piles were seen above the outcroppings. We quickly spread out and worked on the slope of boulders opposite the outcropping. After not too long, Jeff and Derek came across some neat finds, and Steve had 1 or 2 shortly thereafter. Jeff found a neat cantaloupe sized piece of Camptonite or similar igneous material sharing a border with a triangular white Marble chunk atop. After this, several other “Contact Zone” pieces were found, in various combinations of ore material, igneous rock and Marble. Derek left one such sizable piece for Phil to look at in the near future. Jeff also worked on some Dolomite-rich boulders containing vugs and found some colorful Dolomite blades and quartz within. Derek also found some small Quartz points intermixed with small Marble fragments. Derek wound up finding one possible Hardy specimen, which is still under review, and one sizable boulder containing pretty rich Chlorophane Fluorite. Also, he and Jeff both found some Dolomitic boulders containing glossy Sphalerite crystals. Various Calcite and Willemite specimens were found by all with some minor fluorescent Sphalerite here and there.
